D1 Head Coach

Video Transcript:

What's up you guys? Coach Vic here, head coach at Nevada, and I'm here to talk about all things September 1st. So September 1st is the first day that as Division I coaches we can communicate with rising juniors. So this year it's the class of 2027.

This is really the first day we can start to build relationships with the class of 27. Notice I said build relationships. Okay, some schools might offer on this day, but very, very, very unlikely.

Today's really the first day of us building a relationship and seeing if you'd be a good fit at our university. September 1st might feel like a huge deal and it might feel like the end-all be-all, but to give some perspective, in our class of 2026 we have a couple of commits that we did not connect with on September 1st. They weren't on our radar yet.

So although it's a really big day, it is definitely not make or break if you don't hear from that school you've been really hoping for. Every school is going to do things a little bit different on September 1st. Some schools like to call at midnight, some schools will FaceTime at midnight local time, and other schools want to be respectful of sleep and kind of wait until the morning to connect.

So really it depends on the school and when you hear from them, but you'll probably get some form of communication on that September 1st date. Basically, this is the first time we can build a relationship with you. So it might be some get-to-know-yous.

If you have a prior relationship established from attending camps throughout your career, that relationship might look a little different on that initial call, but really it's about getting to know you and you getting to know the coaches or about the school itself. This initial call is really organic and can range from everything to your home life, your family, your hobbies outside of softball, and of course you as a softball player. I think something important to note here is you're building a relationship.

So the more you can kind of get past the very, very basic things and get to kind of the differentiating factors for either me or you in this process, the better that conversation is going to be. Something you can do between now and September 1st is talk to your travel ball coach or your recruiting coordinator. That person, those people are probably going to have the best sense of who might call or has said that they're going to call.

Once you have the list of schools that may or may not be calling, you can then do some research and be really prepared for when they finally reach out to you. I think the biggest thing, we'll go over another video of specific things, but I think the biggest thing is to try to be yourself as much as possible. I want to see your personality.

If you're energetic and fun, like I want to hear that through the phone. If you are, you know, really thoughtful, I want to see that in your questions. If you're a reserved, it's okay to say that and be like, ah, I'm nervous.

Like this is, it's still, you know, however many years it's been for me, it's still kind of nerve wracking to make that initial call because as much as you want us to like you, we also want you to like us. So don't be too hard on yourself. Be prepared.

I'll have a part two with things you can talk about, but good luck to everybody and go pack.
