Okay, let's quickly clear up something. One of the bigger misunderstandings I keep seeing in the recruiting world. When do you actually need to pay for the NCAA eligibility center? So here's a simple version. Every college bound student athlete who plans to communicate with coaches should create an NCAA account. But there are two types of accounts and most of you do not need to pay right away. To start conversations with coaches, all you need is an NCAA identification number. That's it. It's free.

This ID simply tells a coach that you're in the system and that you're taking the process seriously. It allows them to track you and add you to their recruiting list and communicate you without any delay. Now, if you're looking at Division III or NAIA, you will never need to pay for the NCAA paid account. Division III schools do not require certification through the NCAA Eligibility Center. And NAIA has its own eligibility system entirely. The paid NCAA subscription, what the NCAA calls certification account, is only required when you're getting serious with D1 or D2 programs. That's when the NCAA must officially review your academics and your amateur status. And the process costs about $110.

So here's the guideline I give all my student athletes. Start with a free account. Get your ID number. Just get it. Log in. Create the account. Begin reaching out. Build relationships. Do the work. When genuine interest starts happening with D1 or D2 programs, That's the right moment to upgrade to the paid certification account. You don't need to pay early. You don't need to rush.
