Here's how a softball player should fuel on game day. My name is Farrell Frankel. I'm a sports dietician with over 10 years of experience working with elite level athletes. During a softball game, there's a lot of explosive movements. And so carbohydrates are gonna be our number one source of energy. So two to three hours before the game, you wanna have a meal that is heavy in carbohydrates, moderate in protein, Add in some color and then a little bit of healthy fat as well. Here are some examples of what that meal could look like.
You want to avoid any fried or greasy food because that could cause stomach upset and also it just makes you feel sluggish. You also want to avoid trying anything new that you've never had before. You just don't know how your body is going to react. 30 to 60 minutes before the game, you want to top off your energy sources by having some quick carbohydrates, foods that are going to digest very quickly and serve as energy for that first inning. Examples of quick carbohydrates are right here.
The flow of a softball game actually has perfectly built in fueling opportunities in between the innings when your team is in the dugout. These are some examples of foods I would keep in the dugout with you for in between innings. Especially important that you don't have any greasy foods in the dugout because Number one, greasy foods are going to make you feel sluggish and tired. And also greasy foods are going to create greasy hands and greasy hands on the field can create a big infield error.
If it's a really hot day, these are some snacks that you could also bring in a cooler that will help with hydration as well as just keeping your body cool during those hot games. Always pack more than you think you're going to need because you never know when you're going to go into extra innings. Hydration starts the night before the game as well as all day during the game. Especially if you're a catcher and you're wearing pads, that's going to increase your sweat rate. That puts you at a little bit more of a risk of dehydration.
Lastly, a post-game meal is really important to have after a game. This is going to help to repair, rebuild your muscle tissues. restore the energy that you just burned throughout the game. Also hydrating with fluids and electrolytes is really crucial to restore the fluids and the electrolytes that you might've lost through your sweat. These are examples of foods that you could keep in your bag for recovery right after the game. And then these are examples of meals that you could have within an hour or two after that. If you have any questions about fueling for a softball game, leave them in the comments.
